It is very good to 'warm up' by doing some 'stretching' exercises for about 5-10 minutes. Then you may either walk or run at your ease. For youngsters, it is alright to start running after your stretching exercises.
Whereas for senior citizens, who have never 'run', is advisable to 'walk' slowly for a few months before embarking on 'brisk' walking. After your walking 'fast' it is advisable again to 'cool down' with a little breathing exercises. Half an hour to one hour of 'total' time spent on exercising on the whole is sufficient to maintain a healthy body. Good Luck.
You may increase your speed slowly. This is to allow your heart to get accustomed to exercise.
